I started carving around age 12. I have been self taught for the most part with the help of a few hundred books. My first carving tools was an Xacto Carving set. After many broken blades, a frantic mother, and cut fingers, I retired from carving and worked on wood turning until I was 17. In the 20+ years since I have carved numerous subjects, santas, furniture appliqué, architectural pieces, trim, figures, characatures, and many others. Over that time period I have acquired about 40 Ashley Isles chisels, various knives, and some miscellaneous palm chisels. I only work on carving when I feel like carving, sometimes that is every day, others it is once a week.

Words of advice: My father always said "You can save money by buying high quality tools." Think about it, I bet you will agree, if you don't, you will someday.
