Actor’s $100K donation to benefit Phoenix officers

expected to buy 50 semi-automatic rifles for Phoenix officers

by Michael Ferraresi - Dec. 23, 2008 12:00 AM

An unexpected donation from actor David Spade is expected to provide Phoenix with enough money to buy an additional 50 semi-automatic rifles for patrol officers in 2009.

The $100,000 announced Monday means as many as 300 officers could soon be armed with Bushmaster AR-15s, even in light of recent debates between and union officials about the availability of the high-powered weapons during the city’s ongoing budget strife.

Advocates said the need to arm more patrol officers with rifles has only grown since union officials proposed in 2006 that officers should be allowed to buy their rifles if the city is unable to provide them. leaders met recently on the issue but have yet to expand the self-purchase policy beyond handguns and shotguns. Spade, a Scottsdale Saguaro High School graduate, provided the money to a non-profit foundation after seeing a jarring television news report about gun violence. leaders said Spade told them he was inspired to help keep the community safe.
The comic-turned-movie star provided the check to Phoenix Chief Jack Harris early Monday but did not appear at the press conference. The Phoenix Foundation expects to use the $100,000 on rifles.

Reading ’s regurgitated tripe on gun control drives me nuts.  His mission is to enact the permanently in an effort to “protect the children.”  Citing  that Assault Weapons belong on foreign battlefields not in our streets.  I am certain and the rest of the Liberal Democrats will not stop with one ban, but rather will try to ban /CCW, and other items.

I wonder if the people in this picture wished they had not been subjected to and gun control.   I can really see the Liberal logic in the concept of total gun control safeguarding the children.  I am sure the mothers in this picture are not the least bit worried.

Here is a story of a home invasion and the brave response of the home owner and his wife.

It always amazes me the intestinal fortitude that can be mustered in the time of need.  In this case the wife pushed a shot gun barrel away from her head and the husband partially disarmed a 300 pound intruder.

Blue Mound couple: ‘We’re fighting for our lives’

By BILL MILLER

BLUE MOUND — Grappling over a with a 300-pound man who had just burst into his home and threatened his wife, Keith Hoehn had but one thought.”It was like a horror movie,” he said. “I thought I was a dead man. We’re fighting for our lives.”

The overnight crime spree began late Tuesday when two suspects robbed a family in north Fort Worth and then drove the family’s van to Blue Mound where they tried to do the same thing at the Globe Street home of Keith and Kellie Hoehn.

“Very overt, very crazy” is how Blue Mound Lt. Thomas Cain described the fracas.

The Hoehns, both 34, feared that they and their children were about to be killed, so they battled the suspects.

Keith Hoehn struggled to get the sawed-off , while his wife grabbed the muzzle, trying to keep it pointed away from the rooms of the couple’s son, 12, and 5-year-old daughter.

That went on for about five minutes, Keith Hoehn said.

He finally managed to get the away from the larger of the two attackers and turned it on both of them.

Dakota Scott Benoit, 20, of Richland Hills was fatally wounded and John Garland Pierson, 25, of Haltom City was in critical condition and custody at the hospital.

The homeowner summed up his conclusions with this statement:

He [the homeowner] concluded that his family was alive Wednesday through God’s protection and his wife’s courage.

“She’s the one who set things in motion,” he said. “Most people would probably say ‘Take what you want,’ but we thought we were going to die.

“I’m sorry it had to happen, but I can’t help the way people are.”
